    dance concerts

dance concerts are an homage to the 60s and the experimental atmosphere of the downtown new york art scene. this is the imagined experimental atmosphere, not necessarily the historically correct experimental atmosphere.

dance concerts feature and celebrate the work and working of artists, experimenters, and researchers whose work and working exemplifies or evidences what happens when art and artistic methodologies, employed purposefully and responsively/responsibly, determine the professional standard and define the means of the exchange between the work and its environment.

    2023 at Fylkingen

This Dance Concert took place on September 13, 2023.

there is a theme to this event, which is unusual for dance concerts. which is why this concert is called

This is Not a Dance Concert.

the theme for the evening is that range of experience within which a person’s already drawn something from somewhere (inspiration? motivation?) in order to transform that something into something else (communication?), but is yet to decide or is currently in the process of deciding whether to follow that transformation via the experiential pattern determined by “dancing", or the experiential pattern determined by “speaking".

(“dancing” and “speaking” are space-holders. alternative values: “choreography”, “writing”, etc. the range of values ought to remain within the referential field of artistic research. one ought to take experimental dance and choreography [nonverbal] as its logical extreme, the other writing and publishing [verbal].)

    Artists in Focus:

Alys Longley, visiting from Aotearoa New Zealand (link)

    Dages Juvelier Keates (link)

    Leah Landau (link)

    Siriol Joyner

    Scott Cazan

following the dance concert standard, Alys, Dages, Leah, and Siriol have been invited to work, or else: to continue working in public. this in the attempt to create the conditions for an experiment to take place, an experiment organised according to the parameters set by the artists' work.

    One person said…

    2023-09-14

One person said it was really incredible to realise I was actually watching you make decisions in-real-time! It was so pleasureful attending to that. Also, what was the deal with all the green stuff?

One person said I was coding all day and when I left work, I saw the door was open and I sensed the atmosphere and stepped in. I’m so happy I did that! I always wanted to come to this place, see what’s up.

One person said I don’t think I’ve ever done anything like this.

One person said I feel excited about language again. I’m so happy. This is what I’m struggling to communicate with my reading group, that we’re not just reading. Text isn’t dead on the page, you know? It shouldn’t be treated as such.

    • one person said… is a poem written from memory. more than documenting what was said, the poem documents what was remembered. reading the poem, one can speculate at what remembering tells about the one who remembers; about their interests, their capacities, their values.

This event took place on Labour Day. The Assembly, that usually gathers people in conversation, was held in silence. After making the agreements that frame The Assembly, the opening page of Muñoz’s Cruising Utopia was read out loud. Following the reading, individuals were invited to rest or engage in silent exchange with each other. The room was dark except for a reading lamp, which was left on for those who wanted to spend time time reading. The books that were on offer were:
    • Cruising Utopia by José Esteban Muñoz
    • The Undercommons by Fred Moten and Stefano Harney
    • Styles of Radical Will by Susan Sontag
    • Courage calls to courage everywhere by Jeanette Winterson
    • Art Objects by Jeanette Winterson
    • The Scent of Time by Byung-Chul Han
    • A Room of One’s Own by Virginia Woolf
    • Sex Memos for the Next Millennium by Italo Calvino
    • Sensing, Feeling, and Action by Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen

This assembly intended to honour invisible labour, contemplative labour, creative labour, the labour of care, the labour that takes place when the labourer is asleep, the immaterial labour, emotional and spiritual labour, and all those labours that are difficult to argue for within the framework of wage labour.
